A small guide on what to do after a fedora 8 installation
Problem 1: Ugly Fonts, this is very annoying when surfing the web. All fonts look different because most webpages are built using microsoft fonts like verdana and tahoma and these fonts are microsoft property, so they can not be included in fedora.
Solution: If you have a windows license you can copy these fonts to fedora font directory, or you can install a rpm font package from here. This rpm is built using http://corefonts.sourceforge.net/
Tip if you are using an LCD then go to "Font configuration" and choose "Subpixel smoothing (LCD's)" rendering, this will improve font rendering on lcd's.
Problem 2 :Proprietary video driver, without it you can't run 3d applications, or they run very slow. Even when surfing the web and scrolling a web page the page scrolls slower because of missing accelerated rendering.
Solution: There are many guides on the net on how to manually install these drivers, but most of the time it requires tweaking the xorg.conf and other thinks like kernel headers downloading, so I will show you a easier way: install the rpm directly. Livna has rpm for both ati and nvidia drivers, just install Livna repository
and then go to "Add/Remove Programs" and search for ati driver or nvidia driver depending on your board, check the package and press apply.Problem 3: Mp3 support, if you need mp3 support and xvid, divx etc codecs I recommend you to install Mplayer. It supports almost any known codec, you can install mplayer by using "Add/Remove Software" and type mplayer on search, check the box and hit the apply button.
Problem 4:Flash plugin for 64 bit, there are two solutions for this problem, one is installing a 32 version of firefox so you can use the 32 bit plugin from adobe. Just click on "Add/remove software" search for firefox and check the 32 bit version, the one that ends with ".fc8.i386" and then install the linux flash plugin or go to the flash download page to check for a newer version. The second solution is to install the opensource flash plugin that runs on 64 bit but cannot render many flash animations, you can use swfdec or gnash, just search swfdec or gnash on "Add/Remove Software" search tab.
Recommendations This is a list of programs that I use on Fedora 8 , and I recommend you
To install them just use the "Add/Remove Software" utility, search and then press apply.

Now you can enjoy Fedora even more

Posted on 2008-08-01 09:02:33Ahmad, try to install also mplayer package, kmplayer is only a frontend for mplayer, if that fails you can install vlc. Vlc is also able to play almost any format(www.videolan.org).
